Gluten Free Eating

Tips to Pick the Right Restaurant Meals

Dining out is one of the simple pleasures in life. However, for people diagnosed with celiac disease, it can be a very challenging and overwhelming task. The easy and simple task of ordering the food one desires becomes a complex and tough challenge to achieve a gluten-free meal. Some who are advised to go on a gluten free diet are afraid of dining occasions and they are worried that this may only leave them ill with celiac symptoms. Some people dread the circumstances of having to communicate their dietary restrictions to the manager, chef, or waiter. Celiac patients are not confident in their ability to know the gluten sources in restaurant menus as well as the sources of any possible contamination. Given the proper tools and right educational support, gluten free eating can turn dread into glee. Giving the celiac patients the confidence to dine out will increase their quality of life and improve their compliance with the strict gluten free diet. If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease, it will be easier if you follow the tips below.

The first and most important step to gluten free dining is to know the gluten-free diet. You should know the grains to avoid, where to find them, and how to protect yourself against any cross-contamination.

Remember to never start out hungry. This applies to anyone dining out, but above all, it's important for celiacs where there is no room for mistakes particularly on the food that you are eating. However, you tend to make more mistakes when you are hungrier so should you go to a restaurant hungry, make sure you have some crackers to munch on while checking out the restaurant menu.

Be sure to select the right restaurant. If you are out for gluten free eating, look at your directory for celiac-friendly restaurants. You may also go to some restaurants and check if the foods you can eat are included in their menu or call the restaurant and speak with the manager or chef about your inquiry. Moreover, if you plan to dine at an Italian restaurant, be sure to call the restaurant first and ask if it's okay if you bring your own pasta. Many restaurants will also be happy to prepare gluten-free pasta for you and top it with their deliciously prepared sauce.

As the old proverb goes, honesty is the best policy so there's nothing wrong with telling the waiter you're on a special diet. You don't need to explain everything; you just have to tell him you have food allergies and that you need to know how their foods are prepared. If he doesn't seem to understand, speak with the restaurant chef or manager. You may also bring your dining card to help you explain what you can and cannot eat.

Gluten free eating is not at all difficult. You just have to know what you need and what you don't, be very open about your condition, and most of all be disciplined to stick to the diet no matter what happens.
